URL Slug Generator

A URL slug is the readable part of a web address that identifies a page, like compress-pdf-guide in example.com/compress-pdf-guide/. This generator turns a title into a clean slug of lowercase words separated by hyphens.

How to use it

  1. Paste a title or phrase.
  2. Choose whether to remove common stop words and convert to lowercase.
  3. Select Generate Slug, check the URL preview, and copy the slug.

Accents are converted to plain letters (crème brûlée → creme-brulee), punctuation is removed, and “&” becomes “and”.

Good slug practice

  • Short and descriptive: /image-compressor/ beats /free-online-best-image-compressor-tool-2026/.
  • Use hyphens, not underscores or spaces.
  • Leave out dates unless the page is genuinely date-specific, so the URL doesn’t age.
  • Changing the slug of a published page changes its URL. Set up a 301 redirect from the old address.

Text in non-Latin scripts (for example Urdu or Arabic) is kept as Unicode, which browsers support. Some teams prefer a transliterated English slug instead.

Slugs are capped at 120 characters, and shorter is usually better.

Changing a slug on a live site

In WordPress, editing a published page’s slug changes its URL. WordPress may redirect the old address automatically for posts, but don’t rely on it: add a 301 redirect (many SEO plugins include a redirect manager), update internal links, and check the new URL in your sitemap.

Frequently asked questions

Often yes, if the slug stays readable. Keep them when removing them changes the meaning.

They work, but URLs can be case-sensitive, so lowercase avoids duplicate addresses.

Not necessarily. A short slug that describes the page clearly is enough; stuffing extra keywords into a URL doesn’t help users.
