UTM Builder

A UTM builder adds tracking parameters to a link so analytics tools such as Google Analytics can tell which campaign, source and medium sent a visitor. The parameters are utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign and the optional utm_term, utm_content and utm_id.

UTM parameters help analytics platforms identify where your website traffic comes from. Keep campaign naming consistent so your reports remain easy to understand.

How to use it

  1. Enter the full page URL, including https://.
  2. Fill in source (e.g. newsletter, facebook), medium (e.g. email, cpc) and campaign (e.g. october_sale).
  3. Add term, content or ID if you need them.
  4. Select Generate UTM URL and copy the link.

Existing query parameters and #anchors in your URL are kept. Spaces are replaced with underscores so values stay consistent in reports.

Naming tips

  • Use lowercase consistently: “Facebook” and “facebook” appear as separate sources.
  • Agree a naming list with your team and stick to it.
  • Never add UTM tags to internal links on your own site; they overwrite the original source of the visit.

A naming scheme that stays clean

Google Analytics groups traffic into default channels partly by medium, so values like email, social and referral are recognised automatically. Check your analytics tool’s current channel rules.

Where to find the data

In Google Analytics 4, campaign data appears in acquisition reports under session source, medium and campaign. Allow time for data to process, and test a tagged link yourself first so you can find your own visit.

Frequently asked questions

utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign are the core three. The others are optional.

They create URL variations, so don’t use them on internal links. Pages should have a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL.
